FAQs

How should I take care of my candle?

To prevent tunneling, you should give time (1-3 hours depending on the candle) to allow a full melt pool to form the first time you burn your candle. You will have a full melt pool when melted wax fills the entire top layer of the candle. After the first burn, always:

  • Keep the candle wick trimmed to 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch in length

  • Burn your candle on a heat-resistant surface

  • Keep candles out of the reach of children or pets and never move your candle while it’s burning or still hot

  • Stop burning your candle when there is roughly 1/2 an inch of wax left in the jar.

Failure to follow these instructions could result in fire hazard, smoke damage, or injury.

What ingredients do you use in your candles?

We use 100% natural soy wax, 100% cotton wicks, and fragrance oils that are free of phthalates and other chemicals that are known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. For more information, see the California Prop 65 List.

That’s nice. What is a phthalate?

Phthalates are chemicals that are used in a variety of products, but they are generally added to candles to turn aroma chemicals into liquid or to make the scent last longer. According to the FDA, it isn’t clear what effect, if any, phthalates have on human health. But at Chouteau Candle Company, we don’t take chances with your safety. You can feel confident that our candles are safe to be used in your home around your loved ones (provided that you never leave it burning unattended and always trim your wicks!).

Why should I trim my wick?

If your candle wick is too long, it produces a larger flame. A larger flame burns up the fragrance oil instead of letting you smell it, and that means your candle won’t last as long as intended. An untrimmed wick also produces a lot of soot, which doesn’t look pretty on the jar or your walls.

The top of my candle is rough and bumpy after burning. What’s up with that?

This is common with 100% soy wax and happens when the rate of cooling is inconsistent. While it doesn’t look as pretty, it doesn’t affect the performance of the candle. We’ve found that not moving the candle while it’s cooling helps the tops dry smooth.

How can I clean out my candle jar to reuse or recycle it?

Cold causes wax to shrink so you can pop your candle jar in the freezer overnight to get rid of leftover wax. The next morning, the wax should come out easily, but you can use a spoon or butter knife to loosen it. Scrape out any remaining wax and then clean the container with soap and water.
